Because it has become a "jungle" out there! There are over 600 long distance companies. The telecommunications industry was deregulated to promote competition which should result in cheaper prices. It doesn't make sense to pay more than you need to just because you can't get straight answers.

You may think your old standard company is the best. Don't be too sure. Times have changed. Competition is tough and companies often offer lower rates to attract new business. If you are an existing customer, they don't automatically give you the lower rates. You have to ask for them. If you aren't constantly checking the rates, you won't know. Some companies also make it difficult to understand and compare their rates, hoping you will give up and and just buy it from them.

Maybe you already have the "nickel" rate. Often these lower rates only apply to certain time periods and the majority of your calls may not fall within this period. A rate which appears more expensive might be the better buy for your calling pattern.

Most of the advertised rates you see are for interstate calls only. Unless you have the rates for intrastate (in state) calls, you only have half the information you need to make an informed decision. Rates for International calls can vary greatly and can skew your bill drastically if you don't take them into consideration when choosing a carrier. Sometimes a dial-around service can provide better international rates without having to change your regular carrier.

You also need to be aware of:

  • monthly fees
  • surcharges (especially for calling cards)
  • directory assistance charges (often are .75 to over 1.00 each)
  • universal service fees
  • changes in your carrier's rates
  • new carrier rates
  • casual rates (very high rates for using a carrier with whom you are not registered)
  • These can add hidden costs to bills which appear to have a cheap rate. I can provide you with periodic updated information and make you aware of these changes as they occur.

I don't like to be taken advantage of and you shouldn't either! It is your right to choose whoever you want but you should be able to make an informed decision.
